COSI was forced to cancel its 2009 summer training session in Sulmona due to the devastating earthquake in nearby L’Aquila, which killed over 260 residents, injured over 1,000 and left 28,000 homeless.

The beautiful medieval city of L’Aquila, capital of Abruzzo province, had been largely untouched by industrialization. Home to a university and popular winter ski resorts, the ancient centre was full of architectural treasures, and just coming into its own as a tourist destination.

Students at the Centre for Opera Studies in Italy performed outdoor concerts there in 2007 and 2008, and would have returned in 2009.

A year after the quake, the city centre is still largely abandoned. Most buildings suffered structural damage, and restoration work has proceeded slowly.

COSI raised $15,000 for restoration efforts at a benefit concert for the Abruzzo Earthquake Relief Fund in October 2009. Our warmest thanks to the performers who donated their talents to this event, and to the patrons who supported it.
