The 2010 Centre for Opera Studies in Italy's four-week session runs from June 17th until July 14th. Classes run Monday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., with ample time for individual practice, breaks and meals. Sundays are free days.

Under the direction of Tom Diamond and the baton of Kevin Mallon, successful applicants will prepare and perform in Handel’s Giulio Cesare in Egitto (Julius Caesar in Egypt, HWV 17). The opera will be double-cast, and each cast will receive two performances.
Under the musical and stage direction of our acclaimed faculty, successful applicants will be cast in opera scenes focused on their artistic growth and professional development. Performances will take place in Sulmona and surrounding communities. Past opera studio performances have included highlights from Verdi’s Otello, Haydn’s La Cantarina (complete), Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Bellini’s I Capuletti e I Montecchi, Massenet’s Werther, Mozart’s Idomeneo, and Rossini’s La Cenerentola.

All COSI participants may be included in COSI Concerts. Under the musical direction of the Artistic Director and the coaching faculty, selected singers from the Opera and Opera Studio will join the collaborative pianists to rehearse and perform chamber music in courtyards, piazzas, and churches in Sulmona and the surrounding area. Also available is the opportunity to perform in the light-hearted Borgo concerts, as the seven burroughs (borgos) of Sulmona compete for the first place in the medieval jousting competition (La Giostra), which takes place in July.
All singers and collaborative pianists and interns will receive 10 hours of Italian language instruction weekly, for three weeks. Classes are taught to international certification standards, at various skill levels determined by entrance testing.
